Assemblage

What is it?

          Assemblage is a process that artists use. It consists of piece of rubbish, found objects or old object put together to create a sculpture or piece of art. It can be 2D or 3D, the 2D is a relief.

Assemblage dates from the cubist constructions of Pablo Picasso in 1912 to 1914. And the word can be traced back to the 1950’s when Jean Dubuffet create a college out of butterfly wings.

Marcel Duchamp and Pablo Picasso both worked with found objects before Dubuffet. The first woman to use Assemblage was Elsa von Freytag-Loringhoven.

This is a piece of work by Marcel Duchamp and is called Fountain.

Assemblage

As part of the sculpture project I have looked at assemblage and created some of my own with objects from in and around the house. These 2 have been place on or in one another not glued and then photograped.

I like how on this one by using the flash on my iPhone you can see reflected light.

This is one I have made and put together at college and represents a bird.

This one stands up and reminds me of the little flying robot on the film robots. I have enjoyed creating.

Wallpaper

As my parents are taking off the wallpaper in the house I stopped them as the way it was hanging from the ceiling looked odd but reminded me of peeling skin so I have taken some photos of them. 

This last one is a pile of the wallpaper on the floor.

I have photographed my characters and have used photoshop to make them better.

First I croppe the apply out of the paper it was drawn on and went onto levels to adjust the brightness and darkness. Then went on colour balance to darken the red of the apple and selective colour to add or take away any colours. At this moment I looked at the image and te hat blended into the apple so I needed to darken it. I went to filters and added the accented edges which made the lines thicker and murged the colours. Then I cropped the hat and copied it onto a new layer and used selective colour to darken the hat so it stop out more.

With the carrot I cropped it off of the original photo and changed the levels to correct te brightness and darkness of the image. I then cropped the hat onto a new layer and use selective colour on both layers to enhance the colour on both. I then merged the layers so that it was one layer. When I was happy I used the accented edges filter again.

Once I was happy with my characters I decided to add them onto a background off of the internet.

I then used the filter poster edge to change how the background image looked so it didn't stand out much. Then I added the 2 characters to create a scene an changed their filters again to poster edge.

I now need to draw out the characters in different angles and use photoshop to create different scenes.

 This sculpture is by Sophie Ryder and is called Sitting 2007 and is made out of Galvanised wire intertwined.

Maquette

Before any artist creates a sculpture they make smaller versions of them so that the artist can see the sculpture in 3D instead of on paper and also to see if it works aesthetically. Once the artists is happy with the Maquette it is sent to have a mold of it and then that will be cast to show the people who are commissioning the piece and who have asked the artist to create the piece. Then once approved the final sculpture will be made to scale.

Maquettes tend to be made of ..... material as it is easy to mold, add or take pieces away and is easy to make casts from. 

Here are someimages of the maquette's I have made to try and work out how to create a sculpture inspired by the artists i have researched.

 In these 3 I have draped rolls of clay over my arm and hand to try and create something similar to Adam Martinakias as out of all the artists i have researched so far his work interests me the most. To create a better and something a little more similar to Adam's work i would need to Photoshop the clay and place it onto a different background.

Because I wasn't able to see what I had created on my own arm as I was restricted to photos after I had destroyed my maquette therefore I decided to use a mannequins arm and hand to try and create the same effect.This time i decided not to just lay the rolls of clay on top of one another i tried to blend it all in so it looked more like a continuous structure but i prefer them overlapping.

 After trying to create something that was draping off of a hand i tried to create something similar but abstract so that I could create this and see how different materials draped off of it. So here I have created a hand form that is appearing from the table but I need to make the form more abstract and this would of worked better.

Illustrative Styles

To create a story board I need to research comic strips, books, cartoons and graphic novels.

Comic strips tend to take the format of boxes in a line like so...

Although some comic strips are not all in the strict format for example...

In the 20th century comics thrived in the US, France, Belgium and Japan.

In the European comic history in the 1830's Rodolphe Topffer created cartoon strips. Here is an image of Histoire de Monsieur Cryptogame.

His strips became popular after Herge's success in the 1920's with The Adventures of Tintin. Here is an extract form Tintin in the land of soviets.

Comics today can be found in newspapers, books, magazines, on the internet, advertisements and posters.

Graphic novels are basically comic books. Libraries and bookstores separate comic book and graphic novels by whether the story's are continuous or not, if they are then they are stored as comic books and if not then graphic novels. The novels became more common around in the 20th century along with comic albums.
