2000 work essay

This essay will be about Fine art in the early 1930s in particularly Modernism which turned to degenerate art and how that came about, artists and other people who may be involved with the movement at the time and what was happening socially and any big names.

In Berlin 1933 the Nazis came into power with Adolf Hitler as their leader.
Hitler’s involvement with the degenerate art comes from his own love of art and his desire to want to become an artist himself. Hitler’s art represented the natural and real world in all its glory but this new and unrealistic style was not what other artists where creating and Hitler could not paint in this new style. His dream of becoming a respected and widely known artist was slowly deteriating. The final blow came when Hitler applied for a place at the Vienna Academy of art and was rejected twice as his art work wasn’t good enough.

In the early 1900’s a group of artists were creating art which went against the norm at the time which went on to create this new art movement called Modernism these artists were working at the same time as Hitler. Ernst Ludwig Kirchner and Oscar Concosar were two of the artists. Kirchner is now seen as an early modernist hero as he tried to get people to look and understand the new style that was being created, these efforts where soon dismist. Kirchner’s art is about the inner world and what lies beneath; he never painted the natural world.

1914 was the start of World War 1, Adolf Hitler being a decorated officer during the war arrives at a turning point in which he would put his plans into motion to rise to power. This was when he could destroy the art world and get his revenge because his art work wasn’t good enough. Hitler started attacking books, artists and modernism as he thought it was all against the Nazis and all the artists were Jewish. He then decided to hold an exhibition to display all the artists work which was up in Weimar, Germany. This was to show everyone that this art work was wrong, and to make everyone feel the same way as Hitler did about the art work. The Nazis tried their best to make this art work inappropriate, they bunched the art work together, hung them at different angles and some weren’t framed. Around other pieces of work were graffiti which added to what Hitler thought inappropriate artwork.  This exhibition was seen by about 3 million people which most of them laughed. This exhibition was seen as the artist’s funerals as this was the last time this work was to be shown as most of them were burnt or put away by the Nazis. Some of the artists that work was shown were Paul Klee, Oskar Kokoschka, Wassily Kandinsky, Max Beckmann, Emil Nolde and Georg Grosz.
Most artists fled Berlin to carry on their carriers to be artists and mainly to stay alive as the few that stayed Hitler made sure they were dead. The word degenerate became a term people used to describe others and to be used as an insult. Expressionist artists started seeing themselves as the mentally ill of the art world.

The war left Germany in kayos, Hitler had left his dream of ever becoming an artists and began a Nation Socialist Party.
Later Hitler ended up going to prison for trying to over through German democracy and come out in 1924. While he was locked up, in the early 20s expressionists no longer needed to fear the Nazis. In Berlin the modern artists flourished and their work was selling, few people cared about what Hitler thought about the movement. Berlin then became the capital of the art world.

In the early 1930s the Minister for Culture and Education, von Thüringen Frick ordered that 70 paintings to be removed from a permanen exhibition of the scholossmuseum in weimar
Around 1933 Bettina Feistel-Rohmeder who was the director of the Deutsche Kunstkorrespondenz he told museums to get rid of works that reviled Bolshevik and cosmopolitan aspects. Around 16,000 pieces of art work were confiscated from around 100 museums. This was to bring art into line with what the Nazis wanted art to be which was to illustrate National Socialism and glorify the state.

This movement is about freedom of art and artists expressing their own thoughts in any way they wanted. I have briefly spoken about some artists, Ernst Ludwig Kirchner which used to work with Hitler when he was an artists, I am going to talk about him and 2 other artists, Wassily Kandinsky and Paul Klee.

Kirchner was in a group called Die Brucke which was a group of influential and talented German Expressionist artists who flourished in Dresden and Berlin. He is now seen as the most talented artist. Kirchner admired Albrecht Durer and was inspired by the modern city. He was a victim of the Nazis campaign to get rid of all the degenerate art. After the war Kirchners illness drove him to settle in Davos, Switzerland.
Human figure was the central point to his work, sometimes the human figure its self would stand out more than the city that the figure was in. He would try and capture the movement of the individual.
The painting i like most is Self-Portrait as a Soldier (1915) which is what the title says. Kirchner painted himself as a soldier. He was a soldier in the war and this impacted him, he no longer wanted to serve so used drugs and alcohol to get out. War is shown though his paintings, his severed hand which is to resemble his trauma and loss of his man hood. And in the background is a naked woman who apparently resembles his lover at the time. I like this because you can see the paint in the self portrait in the face and how he has made the eyes so dark like he has no sole left or he no longer wants to see the pain of the war.

Wassily Kandinsky born December 1866 and is a Russian painter. He worked in the Bauhaus but when that closed due to the Nazis who classed it as degenerate Kandinsky moved to France. Kandinsky became a French citizen in 1939. In 1895 Kandinsky attended an impressionist exhibition and one piece that he saw and inspired him was Monet’s Haystacks at giverny.
Kandinsky was in a group of people who were all German Expressionists called Die Blave Vier (Blue Four) which was formed in 1923 and included Paul Klee, Feininger and Von Jawlensky. It was founded by Kandinsky and Franz Marc.
Some of Kandinsky’s early works look similar to impressionists work. Whilst Kandinsky was working in the Bauhaus he painted on white ll in 1925 which was a cross between surrealism and abstract art. After Bauhaus Kandinsky carried on painting but most paintings are lost or have been disposed of as the Nazis confiscated them.
I like how Kandinskys work looks like it is so simple but will have taken a lot of planning to create and how from a distance you can see loads of shapes but in some if you look closer you can see there is more to some piece of work. The one i like most is the bohemian bodgie as I can’t stop looking around the painting. There’s more to explore and its odd and its quite playful in a way but also planned.

Paul Klee born in December 1979 is a Swiss German painter. His style was influenced by different movements in art, some of them are surrealism, cubism and expressionism. Klee decided to experiment with colour theory then later on in his paintings he deeply explored this to use it effectively within his paintings. Paul also worked at the Bauhaus school of art, design and architecture. In 1931 Klee took over teaching at the Academy of Dusseldorf but in 1933 he was forced by the Nazis campaign to resign from the academy. Paul left Germany and moved back home to Switzerland and continued painting.
Paul uses watercolour, paint and etchers to create work; etcher is a form of print making. He is known for stick figures, faces and eyes and lots of colour.  Many of his work is small scale but he did few in large scale.
What I like about Paul's work is that it these are kind of kid like, some don’t look planned but others do. One of the ones I like is called comedy 1922 and is and it makes me giggle and it looks like people dancing or house hold objects joined together to dance. It is quite comical.

Today there are aspects of this in our art world as Bob and Reberta smith and Jasmine Ghafur know. Jasmine is a Kurdish artists who used to be a teacher before he came to England in 2000.He has fled from war and conflict to the UK. Jasmine’s work is about displacement and everything he has come across on his journey. He has created a video to show everyone what he has seen and what he has been through. It shows all the murder and kayos back where he used to live. Jasmine explains how he saw up to 14 dead bodies at the end of his street and how his house had been broken into. The photos are graphic and along with the music the video puts you in to his memories. The war shaped his existence he said, ever since he was young war surrounded him and all of his colourful dreams faded to grey. The video is upsetting to watch as you can see the pain and suffering in the children’s eyes and their parents, if even shows babies in cots.

Bob and Reberta smith is the name Patrick Bill is known by and he who is protesting again people saying that art is holding children back. Bob believed that children need to be creative and art needs to be in the curriculum.  He has created a manifest in what he believes and what he shall be arguing. He is a contemporary artist’s and is known for his humorous slogan art which comments on art, politics and popular culture. Smith works on scrap board and banners writing his slogans in brightly colour paint for everyone to see. These are put up in contemporary exhibitions around the world.
Personally I believe in what Smith is doing here as children do need art. Not every child is the same and if art were to be taken from the curriculum children would be over worked with Math and English. Children learn differently and have different interests. Without art there would be no modern building, no colour to the world other than natural world.

To start with I wasn’t sure which movement to do or which time zone to do but I have enjoyed reading more into degenerate art and Hitler’s involvement with the movement. I do feel it was wrong what Hitler did but a man of power like that can make anyone do anything. And the artists I feel couldn’t have done much more as they couldn’t have over powered Hitler.

The movement alone with the art I love it as the artists really express themselves and what they see. There are no boundaries to them and what they want to do and that is what I admire art hasn’t got boundaries and no matter what or who is in the way that shouldn’t stop you from doing what you love and want to do. People in the 1st world countries have it easy other than no the government want to get  rid of art but people in 3rd world countries have the everyday struggle and like Jasmine he still created art and compromised where he lived for a better life there is always a way to do what you want.

Adolf hitler was the one person
Most artists were degenerate and he was out to get them
The exhibition wasn't a good thing it was seen as their funeral

Images were hung in the wrong manner, bunched together some not framed some at other angles and some had graffiti on or around them ridiculing the images making them worse.

Art was shocking how could people paint like that?

The art scared the natzis
Nowadays art doesn't have that power

Adolf hitler couldn't paint in this style he painting real life but wasn't seen as a recognised artists.
He insisted that art was what represented the natural world.

Modernism is painting underneath what you see

In the early 1900s band of brash artists were working same time as hitter

War shatted oscars mind and spirit.
Curtner also suffered from a nervous collaps.

War left Germany in kayos
Hitler left his dream of being an artist and began a  National socialist party
1924 hitter amerged from a buverien prison , tried to over throught German democracy
People started using the word degenerate into normal talk as slag for someone.
Expresionist saw themselves as mentally ill of the art
1920s expressionists didn't need to fear the natzis
Berlin modern artists flurist, art work sold, few people cared about hitter and what he thought about the art .
Berlin became the capital for the art world
Max becmon was a well known artist, before the war he was a good artists, soon there was little in common with the expressionists work but he was transformed by the way. He's painted a picture .......
Throught out the rest of his career he was affected by the war.

the bauhaus house

-In 1919 the Bauhaus was founded by Walter Gropius in Germany Weimer.
-1922 Van Doesberg taught at the Bauhaus and reflected the simplisity and functualism of much of the bauhaus' output after he taught his course.
- The house moved to Dessau, Germany into a new purpose built home that refleccted the bauhaus values.
-1926 the building of the bauhaus was complete
-1927 an architecutre department opened
-A year later 1928 Walter Gropius resigned after 9 years. The Nazi movement was putting political pressure and scrutiny onto the house but in Gropius' place was Hanneys Meyer.
-1929 a photography department opened
-1930 After 2 years  Hanneys Meyer was dismissed because he was a sociallist and brang politics into the house and created a haven for comminism. Ludwig Mies van der Rohe took his place and tried to bring the Bauhaus back to the basics principles.
- 1932 The Bauhaus in dessau clossed by Dessau's parliment and moved to Berlin
- 1933 The bauhaus closes for good because of the Nazi's acclaming them to be communists.

The Bauhaus lasted for only fourteen years,

freedom of art, artists expressing their own thoughts. this wasn't allowed and was seen as wrong. hence why this art was up in an exhibition to show this was wrong and make people see what was wrong.

Natzies when presenting the art hung painting in unusal places, hung them at wrong angles. hung paintings of distorted faces next to disabitlity to show how bad this was (almost like the artist has created something similar).

Abstract Expressionism Artists

Jackson Pollock 1912-1956        Wife is an artists and stood for his work http://www.jackson-pollock.org/

Jackson was the main name associated with abstract expressionism and became a figure head for this art movement. He was the first major art star.
Jackson created paintings that involved dripping paint on a canvas either with a brush but he liked to use a stick.

In the 30s Pollock worked in the regionalist style. The definition on Wikipedia of the regionalism is 'Regionalism is an American realist modern art movement that was popular during the 1930s. The artistic focus was from artists who shunned city life, and rapidly developing technological advances, to create scenes of rural life.' http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Regionalism_(art)
Here is a painting by Thomas Hart Benton called The Ballad of the Jealous Lover of Lone Green Valley. Thomas was the leader of this art movement.

This is called Broadway Afternoon 1950
This one is called Night Flight 1958
Mark Tobey also influenced Jackson Pollock and you can tell that their work is simular with the free flowwing lines. Marks work was first to express the pulse of new york city.

Docuwatch

loads of documentaries about different art, artists.

Art Deco

Art Deco started in the 1920's after the First World War and started to go out of fashion around 1940 when the next big movement became popular. Art Deco combines traditional crafts with the new machine age and celebrates this new modern world with all its machines.
It is a design style which uses geometric shapes and keeps everything streamlined.

One fashion style in Art Deco is the flapper girl.
The flapper girl was all about how woman's fashion had changed from being feminine to being rather boyish. Woman no longer had long hair they had bobs, their dresses were no longer curved but straight down.

Abstract Expressionism

Abstract expressionism
This art movement has been to the artists who painted between 1940s and 1950s. This movement became commonly associated before ww2 and was the first major art movement in american. It was influenced by surrealism and cubism and a development of abstract art.
The art is almost automatic painting as there is no or minimal figurative painting or anything the resembles something else. It is all about displacement.

There are many artists involved in this art movement;
Arshile Gorky 1904-1948
Jackson Pollock 1912-1956
Willem De Kooning 1904-1997Robert Motherwell 1915-1991
Franz Kline 1910-1962
Mark Rothko 1903-1970
Hans Hifman 1880-1996

Arts and craft moment

The arts and crafts movement is an international movement which began in Britain in 1880 and spread to Europe, America and then finally in Japan where it's called mingei which is folk crafts. It was one of the most influenced and far feched design movements.
This movement was inspired by the writings of John Ruskin (1819-1900) and Augustus Pugin (1812-1852).

dada

DaDa is an art movement that began during the First World War. It began in Zurich which is in Switzerland and it was a negative reaction to the horrors that the war brought. The dada artists had their aim to destroy what art was and to create their own new style. DaDa is an anti-war and anti bourgeois art movement.
The founder of DaDa is a writer called Hugo Ball. In Zurich 1916 Hugo started a nightclub called the Cabaret Voltaire with a companion Emmy Hennings on the 1st of February. This nigh club was used for political proposes and by artists, guest artists were invited/came and gave either a musical performance or readings at the meetings they had.
A magazine wrote Ball "will bear the name "DADA","DADA, DADA, DADA, DADA." was one of the first publications of dada. Slowly this art movement became international and was the basis of surrealism in paris afar the war.

Alfred Jarry influenced DADA and Alfred himself was very absurd in his work. He created a play called Ubu Rai which was so bizar it was not accepted by the audience was as a result it was only shown that one day.

Pre-Raphaelite

http://www.tate.org.uk/learn/online-resources/glossary/p/pre-Raphaelite

Pre-Raphaelite is a group of 3 people who are made up of painters and a writer. The names of the artists are Sir John Everett Millais, Dante Gabriel Rossetti and William Holman Hunt. These 3 artists created paintings that broke the rules of compression for example they would put the main character/figure out if the centre of the painting.

The name Pre-Raphaelite came about because of Raphael who was a high Renaissance painter. The 3 artists disliked Raphael's artwork and decided to carry on painting the way which was most popular before Raphael.

The renaissance translated in French means rebirth or reborn and began in Italy. Through the Renaissance paintings began to have prospective and the paintings became staged to create compositional structure.

Charles Dickens against the Pre-Raphaelites.

This is a painting by John Millais and has in it Lizzy Siddal. This painting is called Ophelia painted 1851-2.

Lizzy sort for Elizabeth was a hat maker and was known as Ophelia because of this painting. Artists models were in these days prostitutes as they were the only people who would undress for anyone but Lizzy was not a prostitute. Also she had auburn hair which in these days people with auburn hair were associated with witchcraft.

Surealisum artists

Joan Miro
Joan create painting and sculptures automatically instead of thinking and planning he just does something, it isn't perfect its just like a squiggle made into something. Automatic painting and sculpting is like a direct link from your subconscious to your hand to paper.

Woman bird by moonlight 1949

Here are some of his sculptures

____________

Salvador Dali
Personally i like Dali's work as it gives you a look into his mind and non of it is real but how he draws it makes it possible as you are able to see it with your own eyes. Dali was one of the most famous men in the 20th century and many people like his odd personality, showmanship and mustashe.
His paintings come from dreams and the way he paints them with the crutches holding them up makes them look unstable.
Here are some of his paintings.

The burning giraffe 1936 37

Sleep

This painting is an attempt to put the dream world onto a canvas and what inspired by Freudians theme world of dreams. The disfigured head is held up with what looks like crutches and if they were moved then the head would fall out of the state it was in.

Surrealism influences

This Giorgio de Chirico.  1888 1978
He is  a surrealist artist but was an artist before its time as Giorgio was creating these paintings before the manifesto was written and before the 1st world war. Giorgio Influenced surrealism.

The uncertainty or the poet 1913.
This painting almost represents a woman's desires as of how close the bananas are to woman's torso which looks like it is in movement and back in the time when the painting was painted when something were to happen between couples or 2 people th Eocene used to change to a train going into a tunnel. And in the background of the painting is a steam train with smoke rrefuring to the train as in motion.

Marcel Duchamp. 1887 1969.
Marcel is seemed to be a jokester/prankster take this sculpture of his.

Fountain (urinal stood differently) 1917.

This is a urinal simply put on its back. Marcel was with the anti-art movement which was a group of people who would take the mess out of art and basically turn it upside down. The relevance to R,Mutt is the fact that it is a toilet manufactur which is another joke by Marcel. Also he likes to play with the gender boundaries.

Bicycle wheel 1915 1923.
Sculpture had changed from calving stone to assemblage which is using different materials and putting them together. This sculpture came to life when the wheel was spun.

L.H.O.O.Q 1919.
This is another one of Marcel's peices of work, it is a post card of the Mona Lisa which he has drawn a moustache on and wrote L.H.O.O.Q. underneath it. The letters L.H.O.O.Q. translated into French is a slang word for 'she has a hot ass'. Also there has been thought that there has been a moustache drawn on her face refuring to davinchi's homo sexuality.
